Last weekend we travelled to Poland for a Team meeting. We had a great time and were driving home feeling really encouraged by everything that had taken place. The road home proved harder than the way there and a trip that should have taken only 6 hours turned out to be more than 8.
We had the joy of experiencing the motorways of the Czech Republic. For anyone else who has travelled those roads, you will know exactly what I am talking about! There were more bumps on the highway than there are on the country roads in Hungary, and that is saying something!
Look Out for Warning Signs
After being shaken up for a while, we heard a sudden warning noise. A red light flashed on at the same time showing us that we had brake problems. Having faulty brakes is not a problem you want to encounter after hours of driving! Roy slowed his speed considerably and we made it home safely. The next day when we started the car, the warning light was no longer lit, and everything seemed to be back to normal.
Stop and Rest
It got me thinking that often when we are on a roll, we forget to slow down, we continue on fuelled by the adrenaline of seeing God doing mighty things. When the Israelites fought they didn’t rush from one battle into the next fight, they always took the time to rest. They knew they needed to build themselves back up, and they also took the time to hear from the Lord. The needed to find out what the next strategy should be.
As a missionary couple, we often have to force ourselves to apply the brakes, to slow down and build ourselves back up. We also really need to be in close relationship with God. We can’t forget to ask Him about what steps we should take and what His direction is for our lives.
Pray
The word ‘Selah’ occurs 71 times in the Psalms; it can be translated ‘Stop and Listen’. It is good practice as a married couple to spend time every day doing just that, stop and listen to God. Pray together.
